Capstone overview

What the capstone is

The capstone is an open-ended distributed systems project. It is evaluated through multiple milestones so that no single submission dominates the grade.

Teams and deliverables

  • Teams: up to 5 students.
  • Deliverables: both a group report and an individual report.
  • Evidence: signed git history + AI log + reproducible artifacts.
  • Oral exam hooks: keep a compact index of your reasoning in oral-exam-hooks/hooks.md (used if selected for an oral exam).
  • Course GitHub organization: https://github.students.cs.ubc.ca/CPSC416-2025W-T2

Early exploration

The capstone work starts early with low-stakes exploration activities (historically “weekly reports”) so students build momentum before the heavy milestones.

Domains

See Capstone domains for suggested directions and the nomination process.

Milestones
